Abstract
This study evaluated the relationships between the preterm birth (< 37 weeks of gestation) rate and the levels of the air pollutants or the meteorological indices in Seoul and other six metropolitan cities. Birth certificated data(293,417 singleton births) of seven metropolitan cities from National Statistical Office of Korea, daily air quality data monitored from 70 monitoring stations and the meteorological data for year of 1998 in these cities were collected. We analyzed the data by the multiple regression with preterm birth rate as dependent variable and the cumulative mean values during previous 7 days at the day of birth for the ambient SO2, NOz, CO, temperatures and relative humidity, and daily percentage of mothers aged 35 or more and sex ratio as independent variables. There was no statistically significant relationship between the preteen birth rate and the levels of the air pollutants or the meteorological indices in metropolitan cities except Pusan metropolitan city. In Pusan cumulative mean ambient CO levels were associated significantly with preterm birth rate (p< 0.06).
